New Years' round the Corner!

Feliz Navidad!

Merry Christmas Everyone! I am hoping that your Christmas' were all that you wished them to be...
Mine was great, I could say it wasn't what I had hoped it to be but when I think back now it really was a fabulous day...to start it off I woke up at 1 p.m. :) and that was by alarm mind you haha. I needed at least two hours to whip up some famous Idaho(sub Azer) Mashed Potaoes, by the time I finished these my wrist felt like it was going to fall off cause first of all I did NOT have a potato peeler which wasn't too bad I used a knife and got the job done but second of all I didn't have a whisk or a stirring spoon. Lol

Maua and her family had come to raid my place the night before taking all the cups spoons, forks, plates, pots, and cooking utensils I had in preparation for cooking Christmas dinner at her place. So at the time I wasn't thinking about stirring my mashed potatoes and I ended up having to use a spatula that had holes in it and I would push it down onto the taters so they could squeeze through the little holes and hopefully become a tid bit less chunky. All in all it ended up working...a few hours of stirring, sweat and sore wrists later and from what I was told that they turned out great! :) They are pictured below on the left along with the deviled eggs I made for them and everyone really liked those cause they ate them all therefore, they must have been ok...

As for Christmas dinner and the food they served, It was completely different than most dishes I've had during the holidays, but delicious none the less...first we had salad with soup(zoop they say) and both were great the soup tasted like a mix of cream of mushroom with bacon and basil. And the salad was normal except there were pickles added. For second course they brought out baked chicken, mashed potatoes,  these crepes that are folded and stuffed with mushrooms and a type of cream sauce and some bash which is a drink that is served to go along with the dinner. It tastes like sweet and sour sauce and wine! I like this and then for our third course I finished mixing up the deviled eggs so those were served along with a tray full of polish meats and tomatoes with onions and seasonings.

Throughout the entire meal Marchin, Maua's boyfriend that lives with her, did the honors of pouring vodka shots for all of us, we probably took around 6 but I never felt a thing lol I'm pretty sure it's due to the mass amounts of food I was consuming...but keep in mind I woke up at 1 pm so I hadn't had breakfast! (little self justification "for me") I had a great time talking to her family, her parents don't speak any English so Maua would translate for us, but Zaur the director of our club and Shine came to dinner too. I had a lot of fun sitting next to Zaur he is really funny once he starts talking or drinking maybe that was it lol, but he told me a lot of stories from his previous years working for the volleyball federation. Also Zaur kept joking with me because as a team we all pulled secret santas out of a hat and I happened to be the insanely lucky one that chose my coach Adnan, and Zaur thinks it's so hilarious and keeps sarcastically asking me if I've bought him anything yet!?! Ha I was horrified when I pulled Adnan's name out I have NO IDEA WHAT TO BUY THAT MAN! So if anyone has any good ideas please please please feel free to facebook me and let me know the only thing I know is that he likes vodka and cigarettes and both don't seem too appropriate...I was thinking about a gift card to Traveler's cafe because it is right across the street from the federation and I know he drinks coffee, so most likely that's where I'll end up buying my favorite coach his Christmas gift. ;)

Oh and the picture below is of Polish Cake that Maua's mom brings with her for every holiday no matter if she is coming to Baku or the USA she lugs it along to celebrate it's her tradition and it is very good! Maua said it's made with something like 40 eggs and the cake is spinning on a machine like a pottery wheel and they are pouring the batter so that's how it looks like that! The next picture is my present from Maua she brought me Polish coffee and chocolate! :)

Once Christmas dinner was over I thanked her family dearly and excused myself to my home upstairs so that I could skype with my family. For a couple days before we have been planning on me being there with them on Christmas morning to open presents via skype so I was really excited to do that. I called my mom and she answered along with the rest of the household and after a while they all nestled down to open presents I couldn't see everything they got but the presents I did see were great and all of the family was happy! I took the time while they were distracted by christmas going ons to ELF my family which if you don't know how it works you go to this website and cut and crop the faces of your family or friends and it will generate a dance of elves with photo shopped faces of whom you chose. It was hilarious I shared the link with my mom, brother sis, step dad, step sis and step brother and watching their reactions via webcam was so priceless I even cropped my dog Curly's head onto one of the elf's bodies LOL!!! I was laughing so hard when I watched it myself...if you're my facebook friend the link is on my wall for Christmas day please go watch it if you're looking for a good laugh!

Once Christmas was over Idaho time, I said bye to everyone and by this point it was 130am for me. I decided to watch some Grey's anatomy until I felt sleepy, since I purchased the entire season six a couple days ago for ONLY drum roll........dun dun dun 20 monet!!!!!!!!!!! YESSSSSS :) just a little excited bout that one if you didn't notice lol, and so I popped the dvd into my computer which mind you was connected to my flat screen LG tv via a fancy little cord I purchased so I can watch my dvd's on the big screen now!!! Another very exciting deal for 10 monets...I always am proud of myself whenever I am techno savey and it actually ends up being a success...soooo now I don't have to buy a dvd player that I won't be able to take home since my bags have to weigh so little. Back to Greys...I ended up accidentally watching a whole disc worth which is about 3 hours whoopsies...and then by that time it was about 4am and  Grey's concluded my Christmas 2010!!!!

Today the 26th of December, I woke up at 2pm :) since I went to bed so late you know...right after I woke up Maua called me and asked if I would like to go to the city center with her and the fam. I said "Yep, I'd love to!" Then showered and got ready in the alotted 25 minutes...wellllll 32, to be truthful. I went downstairs to meet everyone and we walked to the bus stop which is about 3 minutes from our apartment, I am really trying to comprehend the bus routes/numbers since it's ridiculously cheap to ride the bus it costs 20 of their cents, which is called something like khopak, as compared to a 5 monet cab ride which is about 6.20 USD. But I get nervous bout the bus because they don't wait for you! It's like a moving jump on if you can make it system and I'm not sure when it stops or where it stops all the time or if it's gonna end up taking me across the city and being my Russian stinks, aka is non existent, I don't thing that's an adventure I'm willing partake on, alone, quite yet....

We had a little misjudgement about the bus today to add to my weariness and ended up walking half the way there which wasn't bad becaue I love seeing the city and by foot it's easy to take pics, we stopped at one of my favorite parks where there is a beautiful fountain and I took some pics. There was a dog there with a Santa's hat on lol it was so cute. I asked why they celebrate Santa here and Christmas trees with lights if they dont' believe in Christmas the actual date, and the response was, the people here in Azerbaijan associate Santa Clause and Christmas lights/trees with New Years it doesn't mean Christmas to them it means New Year's is coming. I guess that makes sense to me, either way I am just grateful they have Santas around here cause it made the holidays feel a little more homey for me. :)

Inside the City Center I took a lot of great pictures of the lights and we took Maua's parents to eat at our favorite place La Baguette! The food is amazing and so cheap, the first month I lived here I spent almost every night at La Baguette because they have free wifi and I could talk to my family and friends, when I didn't have internet in my terrible first apartment! So it's kinda like a second home to Maua and I because we know all the workers there and we used to stay past closing EVER night the owner even knows me by name and was kind enough to give me a key chain from Dubai and is a great guy, oh p.s. (sidenote) I used to carry around my hot sauce, before it ran out lol, and some nights I'd forget it on the table at the restaurant and a couple of times I'd come back and the owner would be mid shake with my hot sauce in his hands pouring it all over his food. Outside, once he realized he was caught I smiled and just said "OOhhh I see you found it!!! Do you like it?" He laughed and told me it was great..but INSIDE, I was thinking "AHHHHHHHHHHH You found my hot sauce from USA and you're USING IT!!?!?! NOOOO It's almost gone!!!!" Lol and for anyone that knows me you're prolly laughing now cause you realize how much hot sauce means to me! And this kind was so good too...alas hum bug it's gone NOW lol and I guess I'm happy the owner got to taste it but wish I'd only forgot it one time not three! ;)

I do have sad news though, for this month, so I saved it for last. Carla my roommate from Canada was having health issues while she was here and therefore left two days prior to Christmas for Canada to get some medical testing done and hopefully a solution. She explained to me before she left that most likely she wouldn't be coming back to live with me, so now I am roommateless again. I don't mind living by myself but it's not nearly as fun coming home to an empty house or hanging out in the living room by myself when I am used to having her here! She was so much fun and I am praying for her every night that things get resolved quickly and her health doesn't affect volleyball. Below are some pictures of the airport, since I went with her to say goodbye and of our last photo together!

That's the update for Christmas time!!!I am hoping to go with Maua to a great restaruant for New Year's to have some good food and then lots of dancing we are going to try to find this anyhow. I want to finish by saying thanks again for reading about my life, and I am so blessed! Living alone will give me some time to learn about myself, and I'm only four months away from end of my first professional season. So far it's been a pretty smooth ride and I love that I'm getting the opportunity to play here in Baku. Let's hope the next round of matches turns out better than the first will a few more 'W's than 'L's lol and let's hope everyone has an incredible NEW YEARS 2011 HERE WE COME :)

Lots and Lots and Lots of love from Azerbaininja

Christmas is HERE!

Happy Holidays!!!! I hope everyone is having good luck with Christmas shopping and holiday plans! :)

Ok so for the week update...our last match we lost in four to Igasadtchi this is the club with Tayyiba Haneef another USA national team player competing in this league, there are at least 5 national team players former or current playing in Baku this season. I personally feel like we didn't come to play, and competed very poorly against them, even though we won one set, the other three were embarassing! At one point we were up 16-13 and ended up losing 25-17. That is just an example of how we performed. I don't have a lot of positive things to say about this match and I am upset that we lost, because we didn't try. It's so frustrating to walk onto the court and know that the person next to me isn't as passionate about the game as I am and this is getting harder to deal with week by week. I KNOW in my heart that we are good enough to beat some of these teams or at least go to five sets with them but for some reason we aren't perfoming up to par.

After our loss, Adnan wasn't happy and he gave each of us a piece of his mind, I had a good hitting percentage this match but he told me that I need to stop returning overpasses if I'm not going to get a kill. In other words, if I want to put the first ball back onto their side it needs to score a point, and I was tipping this ball and it wasn't scoring. I know I need to fix this so I listened to everything coach had to say and told him "ok, I understand and I'll work on it." His other problem with my play was that I didn't serve tough enough and he'd prefer I missed the serve going at it tough, than give them an easy free ball serve. He feels either way it's going to be a point for their side wether I serve it easy or miss.

I have always disliked serving, and lately I'm thinking perhaps I need to start jump serving again, because at least this has more velocity than standing and my jump serve is definitely tougher. I was going to work on jump serving in practice today, but my right foot has really been hurting and I saw a doctor prior to practice about it...whom suggested I take it easy on the jumping, soooo I couldn't work on that serve today but once my foot starts to feel better I am going definitely going to do it! :)

All in all...after our third loss in a row, the moral of the story is that coach wants us to concentrate a lot more, take our games seriously and focus on bettering ourselves in practice! Which I 100% agree with...I asked the girls in our team meeting the day after the match, what I could do to help motivate them? What kind of encouragement do they need during the match?  Because lately I've been feeling helpless when we are losing and being I can't talk to them cause of our language barrier, I just have to try and smile, use body language to jump around and cheer loud so that they can feed off of my energy and get excited too! Whenever we do something grea, or even just to forget about the last point and keep fighting. We would go into a time out last match and some of their faces are so somber like the world is ending even though we are barely losing!!! I'm telling them "COME ON!!!  We're right there!" But it's not getting a reaction back from some of my teammates. So I was curious to find out how they feel about motivation and what works best for them. When I asked this though, and it was translated three ways lol I never really got an answer back! Because my coach cut in and said that he thinks it's a good idea to find this stuff out about each other and that we should spend more time together outside of practice, as a team and bond more. That this is where we can figure out what works for us on the court. I hope we will spend more time together because it will help us to care more about playing for one another on the court and not as six individuals. Don't get me wrong though there are girls that care just as much as I do but it feels like it is far and few between.

Ok enough about the last match! Our next game is tomorrow against Rabita the number one team in the league this team has Kim Glass and Mamadova a famous player here in Azerbaijan, so it's going to be a tough match for sure and we are NOT the favored team. I like playing these kinds of matches though because being the underdog relieves all pressure and being we are quote unquote "expected to lose" we can play our hearts out (I hope) and maybe come out with an upset! :) I have faith in us and my teammates we will see how everyone shows up tomorrow!!

We did get a chance to do some team bonding today! We went out for tea and cake to celebrate Shine's birthday who is the interpretter for Carla and I cause of course he speaks English. I had a lot of fun tonight, the walk to the restaurant was so lovely it was on the Caspian Sea and I took lots of pics from the water works to the flowers which mind you are still in bloom, cause the weather is wonderful here! Especially for the winter months :) I saw a really great building and also got some good team photos in the cafe!

The Birthday Boy next to coach Adnan, and him outside smoking of course...today I asked my coach for a cigarette as a joke, he was so shocked at first until I smiled and told him I was kidding I really don't smoke! Lol everyone got a really good laugh out of it! :)

Christmas tree in the restaurant and some of the girls...

That's all for tonight, I'm going to go and skype with my friends and call my family! Lot's of love, Wish me luck tomorrow! :) Blog soon...

December's Volleyball

Hi Everyone so as I'm typing I'm listening to Christmas Music :) since Pandora doesn't work outside the US sadly, I've turned to AOL radio and loving it!! Also I'm drinking green tea with SPLENDA :) thanks to my dad and my beautiful Christmas tree I bought is brightly shining next to my bed so you can say I'm quite content as I write today! I need to recap my last two matches we have had three games this month already and our next one is on December 19th against Igisatchi, the last two matches we lost in three.

The first match was against Baki. As I said earlier one of our girls transferred from this team just last week and therefore there was A LOT of controversy and for some reason she ended up not being able to compete in the match because the other teams coach wasn't having it. I don't understand all the details but from what I gather her transfer from Baki's club to ours 'Shirvan' wasn't complete and so "legally" she wasn't allowed to play, usually in this case since the coach let her go in the first place, it's not that big of a deal but it was that day. So we were down our starting outside hitter and we had a replacement, Lada, she is currently our team trainer, but can play and she did. It wasn't a very competitive match from the start coming from our side and we didn't play very well the entire game. I was frustrated with the situation because I hate to lose and every game I am finding it harder to cope with the language barriers! I want to motivate and talk to my teammates but they don't understand anything I'm saying and it's upsetting when we are losing and I want to pick them up and tell them to forget the last set we just need to focus on this one, to shake it off, or even useful things like tactical advice. For example through out the game I notice tendancies and that certain players like to hit the same angles or remember that the setter always dumps in a specific rotation but I can't explain these things very well... I mean I'm doing my best to use body language by pointing and telling them the numbers but I feel like they only understand me 20% of the time at best lol and this has been hard for me to adjust to. I've been talking to my teammate Maua about this though and she told me to focus on myself, to do the best I can, and that what it comes down to basically, is just try to do my job and not to focus on the lack of communication or the way other people are playing at the time. I feel like this is good advice and I'll work on it but I'm so used to playing with people that understand me and being a leader and pumping the team up but that stuff is so hard to do now! Anyways, back to the game we lost in three, but I personally had my best match yet I had 7 kills for 13 attempts and 0 errors, I was happy when I finally figured this out, we had a meeting and he put all our stats up, the first match I did pretty well not as good but hit .340 I think it was like 3 errors 10 kills and I don't know how many attempts I could do the math but too lazy lol. And for both matchs the first and second I had +2 blocks I don't know what this means cause it's not the total it's a formula they use and I ended up with 2+ so I think this is good.

Ok now to the third match against Azerrrail, this team is very popular here in baku we train in their facility and they have been the power house in this country for a very long time, there are pictures of their wins and championship matches ALL over the Volleyball Federation, so I knew it was going to be tough to beat them before the match even started...we have a girl that just transferred from this team she is the other middle blocker Aynur.  The first set started out great for us we were up most of the set and were playing very enthusiastically with our starting outside back in her position and a lot more fans in the stands for us this match we were on a roll! :) I was having so much fun we were blocking them and getting incredible digs! Towards the end of the match we had a tough call from the line judge go their way and lost our momentum a little and ended up losing 21-25, and the next set was a hot disaster! We started out up 4-0 then everything just fell apart they have a great jump server and she honestly scored 7 points acing us in a row towards the middle of the set and we were not communicating well, our outsides didn't serve receive up to par and were making incredibly not smart errors! You can't hit balls out of bounds when you compete with one of the best teams in the league, so after we lost the second set 12-25, we switched sides had a huddle where our coach talk to our passers about their serve receive a little bit and he pointed out Audina our outside especially telling her there's more to volleyball than just hitting and serving, two things she is very good at. She agreed shook her head and we all went out ready to win the next set or so I was hoping! We once again started out strong and I had a great push tip to the deep corner that land just perfectly on the line, but alas the line judge called it out, even the crowd was screaming so loud about this call but the up ref allowed it to be called out, and the girl that served seven aces in the previous set went back to serve us off the court. We didn't recover well and lost 15-25 UGGGGGH! Embarassing I know :( I didn't hit well this match being I only had 4 attempts two of them were blocked and two kills so I hit even .000 which is NOT good.

We have two setters on our team the majority of the time it's been the Bulgarian setter Simona, I really like her except she refuses to set me in transition, I think she just doesn't have confidence enough to force the middle and I'm used to Nikki Baker who'd set me laying down from middle back lol, so this has been a huge difference, I wish I could hit more than I've been doing but I don't speak bulgarian so all I can do is shake my head when she gives me the signal for what she's gonna set me and hope that I'm enthusiastic enough she will give it to me lol. I blocked decently I don't know the stats though I'm sure I'll know before our next match. That's that though we lost in three and we have another chance to play this team and I know we can beat them because we didn't lose because they are better than us we beat ourselves in this match and if we just cut out all the stupid errors we will totally be right there fighting for the W!
Here is a picture of my team :) we were all at my favorite place in the city it's called Traveler's Cafe, I'll post a picture of that too! It's so nice there and I love the White Chocolate Mocah it rivals starbucks lol

Aside from volleyball I have been really sick this past week I didn't go to practice for three days because of this and I am not at practice now because I keep having these awful coughing attacks once I start working out to the point where I am coughing so much I feel like I'm gonna throw up...sorry for the gorey details :) but today I asked if I could go to the doctor because I am concerned that if I let this stuff sit in my chest for too long that it could turn into a bad infection and I definitely don't wanna be spending any time in the hospital here! So my trainer called the doctor she knows personally from one of the other clubs here in Baku and wrote down the meds I should take, and the director of our club brought them back to me from the pharmacy. Come to find out in Azerbaijan anyone can buy antibiotics if they would like! :) strange I know lol but I'm happy I didnt' have to go through the whole get a prescription process! So I brought home Augmentin aka amoxicillin, some cough syrup stuff for your lungs, a bottle of iodine and camphor oil! I was told to take the meds and rub the iodine and camphor on my chest and neck, I looked at her like she was crazy lol I am NOT going to criss cross iodine all over my neck, like she showed me I should be doing, first of all I'm not sure why they think iodine will help me, but the more important matter is iodine stains your skin and bad! So I just dabbed some on my chest instead of criss crossing it all over my neck like she told me hahahaha I don't wanna walk around with orange neck skin for two weeks! Lol and I accidentally messed up the mixing of the antibiotic ha, I was supposed to mix the powder with 70 ml of water but I accidentally mixed it with around 800 ml whoopsies...so a lot of math later, I've figured out I just need to take about 100 milligrams a day for seven days and it will be equivilent to what I was supposed to have taken if I'd made it right! No worries I should be healthy SOON! :) Which is good because we have a game coming up and I really wanna play my best and need to be healthy!

That's all for volleyball and health, I am getting kinda sad I won't be with my family for Christmas this is the first time in all my 23 years that I haven't been with my mom and sister on the 25th! It had to happen sometime though, and I know that I will be ok...I was researching flights to see if maybe there was any way I could go home but it's just too long of a flight and too much money for so little time at home. So instead I am planning on relaxing during my break, reading, writing, maybe do some artwork and I will spend actual Christmas day with Maua, she is having her parents come here and her boyfriend lives with her, they have a dog now too and of course the infamous rat lol, so that should be fun, I will experience Polish delicacies! I'm sure of it, and of course I've offered to make my famous Idaho mashed potatoes :) minus the Idahoianness! And also I want to make mexican wedding cookies my moms recipe they are soooo sooo good maybe a pumpkin pie if I can find the ingredients! Well that's all for today I will write again soon thanks so much for reading I hope every one is going to have amazing holidays with LOTS of family and friends if I don't blog before then! P.s. Don't take your fam for granted you never know when you'll be too far to see them like in Azerbaijan for Christmas lol ;)
Pics of my aparment and Christmas tree I love!

MUCH LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First Professional Match!

Hello All,
November 29th was my first OFFICIAL professional volleyball match! Therefore it's relevance is huge and I am going to recap the day and our amazing WIN! :) Ok, so the morning of the 29th we had to be in the facility that we play our matches in which is different than where we practice. It is beneficial/necessary for teams to get to practice some in the facility they will actually compete in, cause with volleyball the gym has a major influence on individual and team performance. For example the size of the room may affect the air flow which in turn affects how much a volleyball can/will "float" once it is served or even the way it moves when you are receiving/passing it, also the lighting is a major factor when it comes to setting and hitting because of course we have to look up to follow the ball and if the lights are different than what we are used to we need to adjust to this. Ok so back to morning of game day...I side track a lot so bare with me lol...we got to the gym and were shown to our locker room it was a big space with a couple of benchs a door with showers sinks and toilets with stalls mind you, because not all the places I have been to have the courtesy of stalls...one place was a hole in the floor and let me tell you I've since been conditioned to carry toilet paper EVERYWHERE because this is not provided ANYWHERE! Lol and I learned very fast to have some with me! The first time I went into a bathroom unfortunately, I realized their was no toilet paper after the fact and I actually said out loud (not that anyone could understand me) "YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!" Instead of toilet paper they have provided their guests with a lovely hose and spray nosel like the kind that is equiped in every American home at the back of the sink for spraying your dishes lol well here they like to spray other things with it!
Alright so back to the practice...A new girl was in the locker room this morning I actually never learned her name and she was gone the next afternoon so, sorry I can't give you those details, but it's pretty common for our coach to bring in a new player, never introduce them and then they are gone just like that. Most likely he changed his mind or they weren't good enough and this is all because we don't have a full team yet. Well...we kind of do now but we still need like two or three more players just in case some one were to be injured. Besides this new girl who-can-not-be-named we had just recieved two other players the day before, Aynur and Audina a middle and an outside hitter. They transferred in from two separate clubs here in the Azerbaijan League, from what I could gather they were bench warmers for Azerrail's club and Baki's club, and boy did we need them! I was so grateful that they came the day before our first match and they already knew most of the girls on my team. I think they have played with each other previously. They have been such a blessing a big help to our team. I'll give you a tad more info on my team before I finally get to the morning practice part, so the club's name is Shirvan this is the first year that it has been in operation, our head coach is Adnan Kistak he is a coach from Turkey and has been around for a while. I just learned the other day that he was actually the head coach for Azerrail one of the best teams in this league, last year, but that he was fired and allowed to start this club. Why he was fired I don't know but I gather it's from the lack of organization and friendliness (I think thats a word) I believe he knows his volleyball quite well and is a very good technical coach, but regardless of the language barrier which could be cause for some minor misperceptions I am sure he is impersonal, lacking empathy and some major food group social skills... (lord I hope he doesn't read this! Lol) Ok and so being we are a first year club we do not have a trainer, a masseuse, a doctor, or a facility. We split time with Azerrail using their gym, we actually borrow their doctor occasionally and were allowed to use their locker room and sauna while they were out of town for a week, and I must say this has been the biggest adjustment coming into playing professionally versus college, anyone who has ever been to Florida State or even watched one of the many sporting events would know that FSU has some of the best facilities in the nation and I was so blessed to be able to compete for the seminoles and use the state of the art equipment, but the down side is, it has made transitioning from there to here quite difficult. Thankfully my best friend Kerri gave me a major heads up about what things were going to be like overseas! She filled me in on the differences and what to expect and that I should come here prepared to take care of myself in whatever ways necessary, cause if I wasn't going to ice my own knees isn't wasn't going to get done! And I did come semi prepared with kinesio tape, icebags and prewrap, some allergy meds and of course imodium lol but still...not having access to a stem unit (a machine that sends electronic pulese through muscles to help them loosen/warm up) or a cold bath has been really hard.
On top of the lack of resources, being this is Shirvan's first year we are seen as the underdogs and a team that is expected to lose to all the other's in this league, I've been told that all any one expects from us for this first year is that we play a "competitive match" but that we won't be winning cause we don't have any big time players with national team honors or world championships underneath their belt and even our own coach has drilled into our minds that we are inadequate not like the other teams, we aren't as good or as tall that we can't hit like Mamodova (famous Azerbaijan player) or block as high. Adnan has reminded our team since the day I arrived that we aren't as good as the other's in this league and because of this we have to train harder and stronger, become faster and smarter. Perhaps this is his coaching tactics and maybe he is trying to bring us down to build us up, but I believe there are better more effective ways to psychologically prepare your athletes for matches against competition that is ranked higher and well renowned.
Don't get me wrong...I understand what prestige is and that accomplishments in the sports world create your resume but I don't take being told that I'm not tall enough or good enough lightly!! And I had a mouthful for Mr. Kistak...of course I was respectful and discussed my personal feelings on the situation outside of practice time and away from all the others but, I explained to him via the interpretter, that regardless of how short I may be, or that I may weigh more or not jump as high in comparison to the competion...and that even though I'm lacking national team at the end of my name, I AM good enough to be here. I also brought up the point that even if he didn't feel that I was good enough he chose to bring me here along with the rest of my teammates, from all over the world on his own accord and if he doesn't believe we are good enough and isn't satisfied that's his own fault and he should be angry with himself for lack of recruiting skills! I have been playing volleyball for 12 years now and the last thing a team needs is for a coach that lacks confidence in them. After I explained those things to him told him how I felt he percieved it all very mildly and admitted that it was his fault on behalf of recruiting but he just thought I was taller before I got here and was expecting me to be a more complete player meaning have higher skills in defense and setting. I explained I would do my best to improve these aspects of my game as quickly as possible and asked for him to please be patient with me because in America it is common for middle blockers like myself to only block and hit I was never alotted teh opportunity to play defense, serve recieve and for the most part serve. All in all the conversation ended cordially and we haven't had another since BUT and I say but in all caps because...mind you we WON OUR FIRST MATCH lol and he has had an unbelievable transformation into the world of optimism! Ha...

Ok now back to the part where we are playing in pregame practice, it's still morning and the gym is beautiful! My favorite part about the place is that it's shaped like a dome and when you look up, way to the very top there is a fan circulating and it's so far away, that it reminds me of those movies when people come back to consciousness and they are blinking their eyes and the first blurry image that comes gradually into view is something spinning and the noise is a whooshing sound like an old drying machine...I don't know why lol but that's precisely what this ceiling makes me think of. On top of being so high up, the gym has this incredible echo whenever coach is talking his voice is booming and when we hit, as the balls make contact with the cream floor it reverberates throughout the entire gym and creates an atomosphere that's perfect for sporting events!

Coach had us do a lot of ball handling/rolling around everywhere to start and then we went into scrimmaging 6 on 6. Being this is the first practice with the addition of three new players, he wanted to get a lot accomplished in the morning before our game... but by the last 20 minutes I started to tire and began giving crazed looks towards the sideline where he was standing, you know...the look that says "are you freaking serious?!" I felt like I was doing one of Todd Kress's blue lip drills where the point of the drill is strictly to make you so tired the lack of oxygen changes your lips from red to blue...finally after a ball was shanked and prior to him entering a new ball into the drill I said something, actually more like gasped in broken English so he could comprehend,  "Adnan finished??? Please we have game, I need save my jumps!" as I crossed my forearms over each other to make an X the universal sign I've learned since I've been here for the completion of drills or meetings. He look at me like I was the crazy one and said to the group "Moeshna Petit" meaning in Turkish get water, (if Duygu, Fatma or Gokhie  is reading this sorry I slaughtered turkish for get water, but I did my best to sound it/spell it) and walked towards me to explain in a very grumpy guady manner that "Maybe in AMERICAAA not normal, practice two times day, but in Europe it's good and ok!" I just said ok I was sorry but that I am already exhausted and need to be able to play tonight. But I was not sorry in the least lol I've just learned to swallow my pride and keep the water's from boiling over with this man cause he loves the power, and I had nothing else to complain about  cause guess what we got water, the drill was finished cause I said something and we went into serving to end the practice ;) !

So now that our first practice was finished we went into stretching ran to cool down for a little while and went to pregame meal at the federation. Something that has been a major change for me is the food they serve here, I would like to say that it's good but that would be a solid lie lol and I have tried to see the bright side of this sitution but YUCK! Is the crap they feed us disgusting...actually for one positive point the soup is absolutely fabulous I haven't had a bad bowl yet but other than that I don't like the meat in the least, especially when it's chicken liver or lamb on an overly large femur sized bone sitting in a bowl with some type of broth and veggies...potatos are great and I quickly learned how to say potato in Russian it's "Kartoshka" :) one of the ten words I know lol. Oh and last thing there is this horrifically HEINOUS green spice that they put in EVERYTHING and it's so bitter and disgusting that I am getting goosebumps now just thinking about it ewww. So this devil spice has limited my food options by 60% cause otherwise I would like to eat the cold pastas or mixed meals but the spice is infesting everything soon as I see it or smell it I have to send back that plate of food, someone told me it may be dill weed, I'm not sure what it is but I know it's freaking nasty. Ok off my bad spice tangent...so After our pregame meal we went home for a little and were picked back up by the bus and our crazy ass, excuse my language, driver! Thank god I have 9 lives because he's take 4 since I've been here and I lost a couple growing up, I actually have bruises from him slamming on the breaks cause some how or another he happened to MISS the PARKED car to the left lol GOSH he's awful, anyways, so we walked across the street where he picked us up and went back to the gym to change and start our pregame warm up.
Our competition for the night was Locomotive another club in Baku. They have some very good players from USA, including Nancy Metcalf, Ashley Davis, and Kristin Richards. I was soo excited to play in my first game! :) I couldn't wait and I started, so I was very grateful for that, but I started in back row and the libero came in for me before the first ball was ever served so my actual first playing time, was three rotations later when Aynur the middle opposite of me went to serve. I definitely had butterflies in my stomach and I was a little nervous, enough so, that I totally forgot to take of my pregame warm up shirt and was running into the match with it on lol, my coach was yelling to me in gibberish and Paulina the libero realized what was going on and started to pull it off of me herself before I knew that I'd forgotten haha! So a minute later and a warm up shirt less, I was in the match playing professionally for my FIRST TIME! We ended up winning in five and we were all so very excited it was an intense match with a lot of great and mediocre play coming from both sides, and luckily we pulled out with a win! The second to last game point 14-13 I scored with a deep tip to the five zone :) one of my favs, for any volleyball braniacs you know what I'm talking about, for everyone else I'll explain...normally people tip the ball short, that's why it's called a tip, just barely using your finger"tips" lol but I had been tipping short the entire match up to this point. It had scored twice and been picked up once, so before our side served, I thought about how the libero in left back had started to cheat up and  was surely expecting me to tip short and that the middle back player had just subbed in, she hadn't played once the whole match so I knew she wouldn't be ready for the deep tip either. So I asked Simona our setter to set me a 'Bash' which is a small quick set behind her head, so I could execute my plan lol and  when I got the point I was really excited that it worked! Then we ended up winning the next point and the match on an ace service! GREAT DAY :) Our coach only had nice things to say OF COURSE ha and we had a loud and obnoxious bus ride filled with dancing and singing back to our apartments. Where I celebrated the win with a glass of fancy Azerbaijan red wine only 3 monets(their currency) a bottle, like 4.50$ USD, and sat with my roomies and two teammates Simona and Tanya to talk about our win and how shocked everyone was that we pulled it out being we are "supposed" to lose an all! So for my first match I couldn't have been happier! I don't know who to or where to, even begin looking for statistics for the game but personally I'll tell you how I feel I did, my hitting was decent but I wasn't happy with my blocking at all and that is something I have been succesful with in the past, but so many things are different about playing here versus college that I am going to try and be patient with myself, to learn as much and as quickly as possible. Like how to block better and outsmart the opponent, but besides the bad blocking I am just so grateful we won! Things couldn't have been better!
So that is the sum it up tell it all of the my First Professional Match, I will write more on our second match and how this past week has been soon...Thanks for reading
God Bless
